64th Strážnice Folkloristic Festival

“Strážnice” ranks as one of the oldest and most significant folklore festivals in the the Czech Republic. every last weekend in June thousands of visitors stream into Strážnice to enjoy the spellbinding atmosphere of the town, the chateau park, and the open-air muzeum of folk architecture. At its beginning in 1946 the festival had initially a character of nation-wide festivities. It gradually started to represent folklore not only in its natural manifestations, but also in various arrangements and stylizations. Thanks to this versatility it still maintains close contact between performers and spectators, while enabling an active participation of the visitors in the festival activities. It traditionally features a contest of verbuňk dancers (verbuňk is a UNESCO-listed south Moravian recruits´ dance).
The main organizer of the festival is the National Institute of Folk Culture in Strážnice. The festival has a CIOFF statute, which places it among selected world folklore festivals. Twice it has been declared the festival of the Central
