13th Folklore Festival “Polabí Posy”5 to 7 June 2009, Nymburk
The Polabí Posy festival endorses the cultural legacy of Svatopluk Šebek (1926-1996), an eminent native of Nymburk, who devoted all his life to the collection of folk songs, particularly from Polabí, i. e. the Labe (Elbe) basin. The idea of the festival, which is an encounter of schoolchildren´s folklore ensembles, is to bring back and disclose to the public the folk art, the beauty of its dances, songs, costumes, and language. Since folklore has disappeared precisely from the Elbe region, the growing interest of domestic and foreign ensebles as well as of the public is very valuable (see www.folklornisdruzeni.cz).
The royal town of Nymburk lies on both banks of the Elbe in the fertile part of central Elbe basin. The historical center of Nymburk was declared urban conservation area in 1992. Among its many important historical sights we should mention St Giles church, a rare example of Gothic brick architecture dating from 1280 to 1380, and the remnants of the medieval fortification of the town, consisting of a part of the brick wall and two moats through which water from the river runs to this day.
