53rd Moravian Ball in Prague
21 February 2009, Prague
This traditional ball represents the major ethnographic regions of southern, central, and northern Moravia. It is organized by the Prague Moravian-Slovakian Circle (Slovácký krúžek, founded in 1896), the Prague Moravian-Wallachian Circle (Valašský krúžek), and by the Association of Haná Natives (Hanáci), in cooperation with the Folklore Association of the Czech Republic. The Moravian Ball is rated among the most prestigious Prague balls thanks to its program and to the large number of performing folk ensembles and musical groups, as well as of other costumed participants and visitors. The program includes ensembles, groups of village youth, dulcimer bands and other musical groups from Moravian Slovakia, Haná, and Moravian Wallachia, as well as members of folk associations and groups from Prague. The ball features a traditional costumed Moravian set of dances and Midnight singing by male choirs. More information at www.folklornisdruzeni.cz. It is held annually in the National House at Smíchov. More information at www.nds.cz.
