62nd International Folklore Encounter Gorolski Święto (Gorol Festivities)

 7 to 9 August 2009, Jablunkov

Gorolski Święto is dedicated to the folk culture of the Gorols – the dwellers of the Beskydy mountain range on the Polish border in the northeastern corner of Moravia. This tradition sprang from the first Polish postwar celebrations in 1947 - 1948. Owing to its specific atmosphere, this festival has become well-known not only within the Czech Republic and Poland, but also in Slovakia and other countries. The Gorol ethnographic festivities take place in the open-air amphitheater in the Jablunkov Town Woods. Its purpose is to preserve the autochthonous historical and contemporary traditions and culture of this region. The opening program on Friday is dedicated to original music from the Beskydy area. Saturday belongs to groups re-creating pictures from the life of the Gorols. Sunday morning program consists of a review show of all the participanting groups in the town square. Then, at high noon, a parade of costumed groups and allegorical carriages starts marching through the town to the Town Woods. During the whole weekend visitors may also see samples of handicrafts, the making of cheese from ewe´s milk, and other addtional events.
