12th International Festival of Urban Folk Ensembles
17 to 21 August 2209, Ostrava
This festival has several peculiarities. One is contained in its very name: it is a festival of urban folk groups. The second peculiar characteristic is that it goes from Monday to Friday. Finally, it has no main stage, apart from the opening and closing concerts in the concert hall of Janáček conservatory in Ostrava. The remaining concerts are held in different parts of the town and its surroundings. The organizers thus aim to refresh the summer atmosphere of the town and make summer more aggreable to its inhabitants.
Ostrava is the administrative, social, and cultural center of North Moravia. Known until recently for its black coal mining industry and to this day for its steel works, it is also surrounded by numerous natural beauties. The tourist attractions include the large open-air swimming pool at Poruba, the local zoo, the mining museum at Landek, or the restored castle of Silesian Ostrava.
