7th Folklore Festival “Horácko in its Songs and Dances”
29 and 30 May, Světlá nad Sázavou
This festival is the biggest gathering of folk ensembles from the Horácko ethnografic region, but it regularly plays host to guests from other regions of the Czech Republic as well as from abroad. Friday is devoted to children. In the morning the groups perform in schools, while the afternoon belongs to a program of the participating children´s ensembles, called “Springlets”. The ensembles also perform in neighboring villages and in social welfare facilities. On Saturday the the festival culminates with a parade of the ensembles through the town, a handicraft fair, and the main program, “Horácko in its Songs and Dances”. The principal organizers of this biennial is the children´s folk group Škubánek (www.skubanek.cz) and the town Světlá nad Sázavou (www.svetlans.cz).
The festival is staged in the precincts of the Světlá castle, dating from the 16th century. The place is close to the nature conservation area Stvořidla na Sázavě and to the memorable Lipnice castle, where Jaroslav Hašek would write his celebrated stories of the good soldier Švejk. A site worth visiting in Světlá is the decanal St Wenceslas church. The town is known for its glass manufacture, which goes back to the 18th century.
